2024 Child & Spousal Support Calculator Update

We're pleased to announce that Divorcepath's child support and spousal support calculators have been fully updated for the 2024 tax year. These updates ensure that every calculation produced through our platform reflects the latest federal and provincial tax legislation, giving lawyers and self-represented litigants the most accurate support figures available.

What Changed for 2024

Each year, the Canada Revenue Agency adjusts federal and provincial tax brackets, credits, and benefit thresholds to account for inflation. For 2024, the federal indexation factor is 4.7%, which is notably higher than historical averages and reflects the elevated inflation environment that persisted through 2023. This indexation affects every tax bracket, the basic personal amount, and numerous credits that flow into net disposable income calculations.

Federal Tax Bracket Changes

The 2024 federal tax brackets have been adjusted as follows:

The basic personal amount has increased to $15,705 for most taxpayers, with a clawback for higher-income earners that reduces it to $14,156 for those earning above $173,205.

Provincial and Territorial Updates

All provincial and territorial brackets, surtaxes, and credits have been updated in our system. Notable changes include adjustments to Ontario's surtax thresholds, British Columbia's bracket indexation, and Alberta's continued flat tax structure with updated personal amounts. Quebec's unique tax system has also been fully updated, including changes to the work premium and solidarity tax credit.

CPP2: The Second Ceiling

Perhaps the most significant change affecting support calculations in 2024 is the introduction of CPP2 — the second Canada Pension Plan contribution ceiling. Starting January 1, 2024, employees and employers are required to make additional CPP contributions on earnings between the first ceiling ($68,500) and a new second ceiling ($73,200).

The CPP2 contribution rate is 4% each for employees and employers, and the maximum additional employee contribution is $188 for 2024. While this amount may seem modest, it has a direct impact on net disposable income and therefore on both child support and spousal support calculations.

Our calculators automatically account for CPP2 contributions when computing each party's tax burden and net income. This means you don't need to make any manual adjustments — simply enter gross income figures and the calculator handles the rest.

Impact on Support Calculations

The combined effect of bracket indexation, increased personal amounts, and CPP2 contributions means that net disposable incomes have shifted compared to 2023 calculations. In general:

Canada Child Benefit Updates

The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) amounts and clawback thresholds have also been updated for the July 2024 to June 2025 benefit year. Maximum CCB amounts are now $7,787 per child under 6 and $6,570 per child aged 6 through 17. These figures are incorporated into our spousal support calculations where applicable, as CCB payments can significantly affect the recipient's overall financial position.

How to Use the Updated Calculators

No action is required on your part. All calculations generated through Divorcepath automatically use the 2024 tax parameters when the calculation year is set to 2024. If you have existing saved calculations from 2023, we recommend creating updated versions to ensure your clients have current figures for any ongoing negotiations or court proceedings.

To run a 2024 calculation, simply log in to your Divorcepath account, select the appropriate calculator, and enter the relevant income and expense information. The system will apply all current federal and provincial tax parameters automatically.

Looking Ahead

We continue to monitor legislative developments that may affect support calculations throughout the year. Any mid-year changes to tax policy or benefit programs will be incorporated into our calculators as they come into effect. As always, if you have questions about how specific tax changes affect your calculations, our support team is here to help.
