2025 Child & Spousal Support Calculator Update

We're pleased to announce that the Divorcepath child support and spousal support calculators have been fully updated for the 2025 tax year. Every year, federal and provincial governments adjust tax brackets, credits, and benefit amounts for inflation, and these changes directly affect how support is calculated. Here's what's new.

Federal Tax Changes for 2025

The Canada Revenue Agency has indexed all federal income tax brackets for inflation, resulting in higher thresholds across the board. For 2025, the federal basic personal amount has increased to approximately $16,129, up from $15,705 in 2024. This means that each parent's after-tax income — the key input for both child and spousal support — shifts slightly upward.

The federal tax brackets for 2025 are as follows:

These thresholds have each been adjusted upward by the indexation factor of approximately 2.7%, reflecting the Consumer Price Index change.

Note: The federal government reduced the lowest marginal rate from 15% to 14% effective mid-2025, resulting in an effective rate of approximately 14.5% for the 2025 tax year.

CPP2: Second Year in Effect

The second Canada Pension Plan enhancement tier (CPP2) is now in its second year. Introduced in 2024, CPP2 applies additional contributions on earnings between the first and second earnings ceilings. For 2025, the second ceiling has increased to $81,200, up from $73,200 in 2024. The CPP2 contribution rate remains at 4% for both employees and employers on earnings in this range.

This is significant for support calculations because CPP contributions reduce a parent's net disposable income. Our calculators automatically deduct both CPP1 and CPP2 contributions when computing guideline income and after-tax cash flow.

Provincial Bracket Indexation

Every province and territory has similarly indexed its tax brackets and credits. Some notable changes include:

Our calculators incorporate the specific rates and thresholds for all thirteen provinces and territories, so your calculations will reflect the correct jurisdiction automatically.

Federal and Provincial Benefits

The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) maximum amounts have been indexed for the July 2025 to June 2026 benefit year. For children under six, the maximum annual benefit is approximately $7,997 per child, and for children aged six through seventeen, approximately $6,748. These amounts are phased out based on adjusted family net income, starting at $37,487.

Provincial child benefit programs — including the Ontario Child Benefit, BC Family Benefit, and Alberta Child and Family Benefit — have also been updated with their respective 2025 amounts and phase-out thresholds.

Impact on Support Calculations

In general, bracket indexation means that a parent earning the same gross income in 2025 as in 2024 will have a slightly higher after-tax income. This can affect both child support (through the Federal Child Support Guidelines table amounts) and spousal support (through the Spousal Support Advisory Guidelines formulas).

The net effect on any individual case depends on the specific incomes and circumstances involved. In most cases, the changes are modest — typically resulting in differences of a few dollars per month — but they can be more significant at higher income levels or where the payor's income sits near a bracket boundary.

How to Use the Updated Calculators

No action is required on your part. If you run a new calculation on Divorcepath, it will automatically use 2025 tax parameters when the calculation date falls within the 2025 tax year. Existing saved calculations will continue to reflect the tax year in which they were originally created.

If you want to compare results across tax years, you can adjust the calculation date in the calculator settings. This is useful for showing clients how their support obligations or entitlements may change from year to year.

Looking Ahead

We continue to monitor legislative and regulatory changes that affect family law calculations. The 2025 Federal Child Support Guidelines table amounts are expected to be released later this year, and we will update our calculators as soon as the new tables are published.

If you have questions about how the 2025 tax changes affect a specific case, feel free to contact our support team or try a calculation using our child support calculator or spousal support calculator.
