Use a reviewed Clio transfer to copy existing documents, send selected matter or contact details, or resolve differences between linked files. Review the destination and exact files before anything is transferred.
You must be an organization administrator with access to the affected matters and an active Clio connection. First complete Clio setup and sync settings. These actions use existing matter links; they do not find or create a Clio matter for you.
Choose the right action
- Send existing Divorcepath content to Clio: Use Sync to Clio… for selected documents or a linked matter. A matter-level review can also include supported matter and contact updates.
- Copy missing files in either direction: Use Sync whole matter for one linked matter, choosing Divorcepath → Clio, Clio → Divorcepath, or both.
- Control future updates: Save the matter's Ongoing Clio sync direction. Saving this policy transfers no files.
- Resolve an already-linked file: Open Review sources for a document needing attention.
For example, to bring missing Clio files into Divorcepath once while keeping future updates incoming only, choose Clio → Divorcepath for the transfer and separately save that same ongoing direction. The transfer choice alone does not change future behavior.
Send selected existing content to Clio
- Open the linked matter's actions in Matter Settings and choose Sync to Clio…, or select files in its Documents page and use that action.
- For several matters, open the Clio integration page's Send existing Divorcepath content to Clio section. Search for linked matters and select up to 100. Click Divorcepath → Clio. Loading more results does not select them; changing search or sort clears the selection.
- Check each Clio destination and the proposed files. Matter-level reviews start with documents enabled and matter/contact updates unchecked. Select Update matter details or Update contact details only when intended. A selected-file launch stays limited to those files.
- Review excluded categories and skipped reasons. Uncheck files you do not want to send. A changed selection requests a fresh review.
- Click Confirm and sync. Read the results for completed, skipped, failed, and unfinished items.
Opening or cancelling a preview transfers nothing. Confirmation authorizes the reviewed scope. Closing the dialog after confirmation does not undo accepted work. Matters without a valid existing Clio link stay unchanged.
Copy missing files for one whole matter
- Open Sync whole matter from the linked matter's actions. Alternatively, select exactly one linked matter in the integration page's transfer section and choose Divorcepath ⇄ Clio.
- Check the linked destination and choose Direction for this transfer: Divorcepath → Clio, Clio → Divorcepath, or Divorcepath ⇄ Clio.
- Review and select files, including any exclusions. If you changed the ongoing policy in the same dialog, save or reset that separate choice before confirming the transfer.
- Click Confirm whole-matter sync and inspect the per-file results.
This copies files that lack document links. It does not compare contents, match duplicates by name, replace already-linked files, or update matter/contact details. Two unlinked copies with the same name can become separate documents. Check both sides before transferring.
Connection permissions and integration settings still apply. Choosing both directions does not enable a disabled category; the review explains exclusions and permits the remaining eligible work.
Set the ongoing direction separately
For one linked matter, open the Future automatic updates panel, choose the ongoing direction and click Save ongoing direction:
- Divorcepath → Clio: Permits eligible outgoing changes and restricts incoming changes.
- Clio → Divorcepath: Permits eligible incoming changes and restricts outgoing changes.
- Divorcepath ⇄ Clio: Permits eligible changes in both directions.
- Follow integration settings: Removes this matter's direction override.
Each choice remains limited by connection permissions and integration-wide categories. Saving direction copies nothing, does not retry stopped uploads, and does not change other matters. Matter Settings and the integration page show the saved direction and current restrictions.
Review changes to linked documents
Later eligible updates use the saved link and last successful content synchronization. If one copy changed, its content can flow in the permitted direction. If both changed, you must choose a source. A newer timestamp alone does not choose the winner. Older linked files without enough baseline evidence may also need review.
- Open the matter's sync review and find the linked document needing attention.
- Click Review sources and inspect the current Divorcepath and Clio copies.
- Choose the permitted source for content and, independently, the filename. A content change does not automatically decide a conflicting rename.
- Confirm the displayed choices. If either copy or the settings changed during review, review the refreshed evidence before confirming again.
Until a required choice is confirmed, both copies remain unchanged. Changing only a filename extension does not convert the file format.
If a document is open for editing, incoming replacement waits until the editing session ends or expires. Save and close the editor, then check status. Sync rereads both saved copies; if both changed, it asks for a source. An interrupted manual transfer can still require an explicit retry.
Recover interrupted or stopped work
Open the saved transfer or the matter's sync review to inspect incomplete transfers and retained uploads. Reading saved status does not restart a transfer. Successful items remain saved after a partial failure.
- Resume synchronization: Continues the accepted saved operation when offered, including checking an interrupted response. It does not widen the approved selection.
- Retry unfinished files: Explicitly retries eligible unfinished work after you address the displayed cause. Completed effects are retained.
- Retry retained Clio upload: Finishes the retained Divorcepath revision in its already-created Clio version. It keeps the current Divorcepath copy unchanged.
- Release stopped upload and keep link: Retires an upload stopped by policy, preserves the link and both copies, and transfers no bytes. Review the current linked copies again to choose a source.
- Release delivery and unlink: Ends the document link and keeps both copies and any unfinished Clio version. The retained local copy stays excluded from whole-matter export. A later import or explicit file export can create separate duplicates; read the confirmation carefully.
- Close transfer: Removes an eligible terminal transfer from incomplete work while keeping outcomes and history. The confirmation covers the entire transfer, including other matters in it. Active or uncertain work can prevent closure.
Some unfinished imports also offer release of a stopped reservation, preserving the retained copy and history. Only use recovery actions offered for that item. If the provider outcome is unknown or an action remains unavailable, contact support rather than starting another transfer to force a retry.
Start a new review resets the browser's saved review pointer. It does not cancel accepted work or resolve an unknown provider result. Restoring settings or resuming the connection does not automatically replay stopped saves.
Versions, deletion, and activity
Before replacing content in Divorcepath, sync preserves the previous destination version. Replacements in Clio create a document version. If preservation fails, replacement stops. Displaced Divorcepath sync versions are retained for at least 90 days; saved or starred versions remain until deliberately removed. Ask support if you need help recovering an earlier copy.
Sync never permanently deletes records or document contents. Cross-matter moves end the document link and preserve both copies; moves between folders in the same matter keep the link. Disconnecting clears document links, and reconnecting does not restore them. See the integration guide for deletion settings and Pause/Resume behavior.
Incoming Clio document, matter, and contact changes and unlinking appear in matter activity with Clio as the source. A receipt records an incoming event; check the file and sync result to confirm replacement completed.
Troubleshooting
- A file is excluded: Check the matter link, accepted permissions, integration categories, ongoing direction, and any required “Divorcepath: sync” field.
- A linked file did not change after whole-matter sync or Resume: Those actions do not refresh linked content. Check linked-file status and use Review sources when needed.
- A Clio file exists but is not downloadable: Document creation and byte delivery are separate stages. Inspect retained-upload status; a link alone does not prove delivery finished.
- A disclosure file is missing: Confirm successful interview submission and outgoing document settings. Reconnection does not backfill missed submissions.
- A transfer failed or the result is unclear: Inspect the saved operation first. Wait after rate limiting and use its explicit recovery action. A missing browser response does not mean nothing was saved.
